A Postcard A Day - Tuesday 5 May 2020 - T for .. liberation, beautiful ladies and a haircut.

Good morning ladies! Today is Tuesday, so it is time for the T-Party. Elizabeth and Bluebeard host this event every Tuesday, and you can join in the fun by posting something with a drink in it (or a reference to a beverage). My qualifier is a cute little coffee cup ballerina. (don't ask!)

As usual I would like to show you some cards and stamps that I have received recently.
This black and white vintage looking card was sent to me by Kirsten in the Netherlands. She tells me the girl on the left is Anna Ondráková, or Anny Ondra.

Anny Ondra (born Anna Sophie Ondráková, 15 May 1903 – 28 February 1987) was a Czech film actress. She began her career in 1920 and appeared in Czech, German, Austrian, French and English films. In 1933, she married German boxing champion Max Schmelling. (Wikipedia)

Here is a wedding photo of Anny and her boxer husband Max:
Here they are many years later:

The girl on the right in my postcard is Hanni Weisse.

Hanni Weisse (16 October 1892 – 13 December 1967) was a German stage and film actress. She appeared in 146 films between 1912 and 1942. (Wikipedia)

I've not been able to find much more about her.

The stamp shows a typical Dutch house, (like the one I showed last week).

The stamp is part of a series on Dutch symbols:

When you think of the Netherlands you might think of bicycles, Friesian cows, canal houses, windmills or tulips. (And perhaps me).

Well, the second card comes from the USA would you believe. It shows a beautiful young lady sitting in a window.

The photographer is Uwe Ommer, a German photographer, known for photographing ladies.

The stamps are beautiful. The whole series of Tropical Fruit: papaya, guava, kiwi, pomegranate and star fruit.
Designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland, the stamps went on sale nationwide April 25, 2008.

Today in the Netherlands it is Liberation Day. Liberation Day is a public holiday in the Netherlands celebrated each year on 5 May to mark the end of the occupation by Nazi Germany during World War II. It follows the Remembrance of the Dead on 4 May.
My home town of Rotterdam was liberated by the Canadian army, and my mother can't stop talking about it. The Dutch suffered a lot under the Nazi regime.
Every year there are parades where the veterans have place of honour. The Rotterdammers have a special place in their hearts for the food droppers. The crews of planes that dropped food on the starving city.

How are you all coping with the lockdown? Has there been some relaxing of the rules? Here, since Monday, we are allowed out for a walk at certain times!
We can go out between 10 and 12 midday and from 7 to 8 in the evening.

Because the hairdressers are still closed I have had to ask my hubby to cut my hair as it was growing much too long in my neck.

He did a very good job, although you can't see it very well on the photo. The wind whipped it up.

I didn't mean to be rude and turn my back on you! Want to see my face? Alright then:

I've been cooking and baking again. This week I was very excited about Herman,  my Friendship cake.

Have you encountered Herman the German friendship cake?
It’s essentially a starter culture that you feed over a few weeks before making a delicious (apple) cake.
The idea is that you make your own sourdough starter and once it has grown to a certain size, you split the mixture and share it with friends everyone you know. Here is my first Friendship bread:
It is a chocolate and walnut cake (not apple) and it is going to my friend Patricia, together with a starter and the instructions, as the whole process of feeding and stirring takes 10 days. (Of course I made one for ourselves as well.)
This is it from me today.
I hope you all have a very good week,
Keep smiling, and keep your (social) distance,
Hugs,
Lisca

  1. Oh I know about this friendship bread and have actually made one also. I made a chocolate sourdough cake this past week, and it was delicious. Your friendship bread looks delicious. And I need a haircut also. Here in New Hampshire hairdressers can open next week with lots of restrictions in place. I probably shouldn't go but I need that haircut. I will wear my mask and gloves for sure. And I like that walking schedule. And most of all I found your story of the LIberation Day in the Netherlands quite interesting. Italy has one around this time too I believe. I hope you enjoy your T day. Hugs-Erika

  3. Such a great selection of stamps and postcards today. I am liking the stamps with the fruit.
Our state has not relaxed yet on lock down. Our governor is doing three different levels- red, yellow and green. We are still in red so we are very restricted. I am over this and ready to return to normal.
That was sweet of your hubby to cut your hair. He did a great job.
    Happy Tea Day,
    Kate

  4. Hi Lisca. Lovely postcards, I especially like the one from America, great shot of the girl. The Liberation must have been a very good feeling, so many people had suffered and were starving, poor things. Not something people can forget. Herman the German is unforgettable. In my time when I was teaching, especially back in the 70s and 80s Herman was very popular and was everywhere! We have a lot less restrictions here, it's a bit scary. Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie

  5. I can´t even decide what I like better, the cards ot the stamps!
Well, I didn´t know about this public holiday, but accidentially I have a bit of the same subject today...
I have to say. Hm. Your Mother cannot stop talking and my family always shut it out, I only got information bit by bit. Both not good.
That "leaflet" - as sad as it is, made me smile. Well done at least.
Your hubby did a great job. I don´t even dare to ask mine, I might end up bald ;-)
Great cake, happy T-day and hugs from here.

  6. Lovely postcards and stamps. Your hair cut looks nice. I'm wondering if the Lock Downs will change how some people go about getting hair cuts. With people needing to do it themselves, some might decide to save the money by continuing to do it themselves even when the Lock Downs are lifted. The Economic Tsunami hasn't struck yet, but it could leave devastation worse than the Great Depression. Your bread looks delicious. Happy T-Day!

  7. Beautiful postcards. Both Anny and Max were beautiful people. You got some great postage stamps, too.

Happy Liberation Day. Sadly, I've not heard of it. But I can tell it runs deep in your family.

Too bad I'm not a baker. That friendship cake looks good.

Great that you had someone to cut your hair. I had mine cut very short (near my scalp, short) in January or February, so it's just now growing out. I can't stand hair down to my neck, so you are lucky you have someone willing to cut yours.

Thanks for sharing the postcards, the Liberation Day information, your friendship cake, and your cute coffee card with us for T this Tuesday, dear Lisca.

  8. Hi Lisca, your cake looks delicious, I managed to get some flour last week from consum so I can make some pastry .
My hair is getting too long but I’m not sure I would go to the hairdressers even if it was open, I’ve trimmed my fringe but it’s already grown.
Those postcards are lovely, don’t you just love the dresses they wore in those days, pretty with all the beads.
Hope you have managed to escape from your house too , not too exciting but it’s ni e to see a few people from afar, ole ty on bikes riding around
    Have a good T day

  9. This was fun to read, Lisca. It's just chock full of interestng facts.

Giving age groups certain hours to shop is an interesting concept. I wonder what the reasoning is. Seniors are the highest risk group. So this puts them at even higher risk.

I expect that when we're allowed out freely here, it will be all age groups all the time.

I like the story of friendship cake. But I can't imagine the sour taste in a sweet cake.

    Happy T-Day! Eileen xx

  10. Lovely interesting postcards and it was a super selection of stamps.
It seems a good idea to have times when the different age groups can go go for walks, but must also have its limitations especially in extended families.
You were very brave letting your husband cut your hair, he did a good job. Mine will have to stay wild till the hairdressers reopen, although I did a fairly good job cutting my husbands the other day. Not that he could complain seeing as how we are both having to stay home.
The friendship cake looks good and is a lovely idea to share the starter.
    Stay safe and take care.

  11. What super wonderful postcards and stamps Lisca! I especially LOVE the one of the two ladies-love the vintage styles!!
Things are very slowly (in phases as the governor is saying)beginning to reopen- but still no hairdressers or barbers. It is nice to be able to go outdoors and at least walk or bike though. I remember making Friendship bread:) Keep well, and happy T day!

  14. Great postcards! I can't imagine letting my hubby cut my hair! Mine is so straight and not that thick so it would show if it were crooked...I'm letting it grow. Your apple cake turned out wonderful! Enjoy the rest of your week.

  15. The teacup ballerina is just so cute. I also enjoyed the history of Liberation Day. We are still are under a stay at home advisory in my state of Massachusetts, only going out for essentials. While the hospitalizations and deaths from Covid have plateaued, the numbers haven't dropped significantly for the governor to relax the guidelines. Another decision will be made in 2 weeks, but I think the advisory will be extended again. I did a friendship bread many years ago. It was called an Amish Friendship bread and was an apple bread. The chocolate walnut cake looks so good. Take care and Happy T Day
