A Postcard A Day - Friday 6 September 2019 - Friday Smiles

Hello lovely ladies,
How are you all? It is Friday again and time to remember our smiley moments of this week.
A postcard in my postbox always makes me smile, and this week there were many (my postman is back from holiday and I got the backlog of post this Tuesday).
The first one comes from Kimberley in Gent in Belgium.

I found some info about this shipping company:

The Red Star Line was an ocean passenger line founded in 1871 .The company's main ports of call were Antwerp in Belgium, Liverpool and Southampton in the United Kingdom and New York City and Philadelphia in the United States.
The company declared bankruptcy in 1934.
About a quarter of the some two million Red Star Line migrants were Jews, largely from Eastern Europe until the exodus driven by the rise of Nazi Germany. Among them were many famous persons, including regular passenger Albert Einstein. On learning of the Nazi confiscation of his possessions, Einstein chose not to return to Germany; his letter resigning from the Prussian Academy of Sciences, written on the line's stationery, is a part of the museum exhibit. Other notable emigrants included the five-year-old Irving Berlin.

The second one comes from Germany from a lady with a beautiful name: Edeltraut. She lives in a small village in the Black Forest, near the valley of the Rhine and near France (Strasbourg). The village on the card is Sasbachwalden. I assume that is her village. I love the flowers and the window boxes.

She writes "No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted".
The stamps are beautiful. The left one is a flower: Wiesenschaumkraut in German. I looked it up and apparently it is called Lady's-smock or cuckoo flower in English. The stamp on the right has a moon stone on it. Fascinating.

I might have mentioned that we have gone vegan (temporarily). It's for three weeks. Not only vegan but cutting out sugar, alcohol, coffee and real tea and yeast. It has been a challenge but we are both enjoying it. One of the first meals I cooked was this spiralised sweet potato and broccoli stir-fry.
We've made oat pancakes, I've made hummus and also overnight oats, and we are both feeling very on it (of course).

Monday I went to my friend Antonia's house. She is my prayer partner and Monday is the day we pray together. When we had finished, I asked her if I could pick up some herbs. We went outside and cut some rosemary and basil. She also had marjoram that was already dried. And the figs were ripe on the tree, so I got a few of those too.

Tuesday was market day.  I spotted these  and immediately bought them. I thought they were borlotti beans (fresh ones) but the pods were mostly empty and they look a bit like runner beans. I confess I was disappointed. I haven't cooked them yet.

That was (some of) my week.

Now I'm off to Annie at A Stitch In Time and Virginia at Rocking Your World Friday.

As usual I am adding some funnies at the end for you to chuckle over.

Wishing everyone a great weekend,
Keep smiling,
Hugs,
Lisca

  1. You received some beautiful postcards this week. I bet with a bevy of them now that your mailman is back, it must have been hard deciding which two to show first.

I read a lot about the Red Star Line one year when I was creating a book page on large cruise ships. Their ships were certainly well appointed and catered to many classes. The second postcard was lovely, too.

I can go vegan in a heartbeat, but I cannot give up my coffee. You wouldn't like me very well if you tried to take that away from me (grin). Those beans reminded me of some I saw in my market a few months ago. I'm glad you are enjoying your diet.

My favorite was the old woman, and of course, I loved the two bridges, too. You know where my mind is!! I had a good chuckle at Cloud Storage, too.

Have a super Friday and rest of the weekend, dear Lisca.

  2. Morning Lisca, you seem to be managing your vegan weeks, I'm not sure I would manage or cope with the moaning from hubby and said 18 year old.

The postcards are lovely as are the stamps and the ladies name is really sweet.

The beans should still be good even if they aren't what you expected, we've taken to boiling and then pan frying with a little spray oil and some salt which really lifts the flavour.

Loving the funnies as always, have a great day.

    Hugs

  3. Hi Lisca. You always have such brilliant posts and this is no exception. The postcards are great and I especially love the Red Star Line one. This style of art work is one of my favourites and the stamps are gorgeous. I think the lady in bed is me Lol! I do tend to eat lots of food like this but you just need to be careful that you are getting enough protein and not all the foods contain the nine essential amino acids that are in meat but as long as you have a good variety you should be fine and of course they contain other great things too but I'm sure you know all this already. Have a lovely weekend, Angela xXx

  4. I'm always smiling when I finish reading your posts Lisca and today is no exception. I love how you use each postcard to learn about what/ where they are from and the stamps are gorgeous. The diet sounds interesting/challenging. I bet it's not easy to always find something you fancy eating but well done you for taking part in it. Your funnies are brilliant especially the last one...this is me to perfection [I like my bum covered :-)].
    Hugs,
    Annie x

  5. Hi Lisca. I can relate to that last funny!
Love the postcards - all those beautiful flowers. I used to grow lady's smock in my little garden patch as a child.
I often buy 'unrecognisable' items from the market and quite often I am disappointed. I actually love runner beans but not Spanish ones. They squeak on your teeth.
It is lovely to have those fresh herbs from your prayer partners garden.
Well done on the diet. I could cope with most of it but I am not giving up on my cup of tea. I import it from Ireland and that and water are my main drinks. Kate xx

  7. Vegan does sound challenging to me, though I do love vegetarian meals and meat is not a big part of my diet. I've never tried spiralizing veggies, but that dish looks delicious.

It must be fun getting the post cards after your recent drought :)
