Good morning, (In Spanish 'buenas días')
This image is not a postcard but one of those things my girl friends send me on my mobile to say good morning. That is very sweet of course, but I get about 20 a day and I moan because I have to spend a quarter of an hour every day deleting them from my phone.
My first postcard is an old advert for plimsols or sandals. I bought it in Basque country when we traveled through there, and now it is on its way to another Postcrossing member.
The sport you see in the picture is called 'pelota', it is the national sport of the Basque country.
It is played against a wall (I imagine a bit like squash).
There are more than ten different disciplines with different rules and ways of playing (one wall or two, having a net or not etc). It can be played with a bat or a glove or characteristically with a basket:
This one is called a long xistera.
Here is a link to a three and a half minute video about pelota.
That was the card I sent and this is a card I received not long ago:
Can you guess what language this is by looking at it? I haven't yet google translated it but I know it is a recipe for chocolate muffins. Perhaps you recognised the Moomin character... Of course it is Finnish. A language not related to any other European language. Total gobbledegook!Have you not heard of Moomins? They are very recognisable. Wikipedia says this:
The Moomins (Swedish: Mumin) are the central characters in a series of books and a comic strip by Swedish-speaking Finnish illustrator Tove Jansson, originally published in Swedish by Schildts in Finland. They are a family of white, round fairy tale characters with large snouts that make them resemble hippopotamuses. The carefree and adventurous family live in their house in Moominvalley, though in the past, their temporary residences have included a lighthouse and a theatre. They have had many adventures along with their various friends.
In all, nine books were released in the series, together with five picture books and a comic strip being released between 1945 and 1993.
The Moomins have since been the basis for numerous television series, films and even a theme park called Moomin World in Naantali, Finland.
And this is the stamp on the card:
It looks very yummy but I have no idea what it is....
I have to let you down on the next picture too. It is a pretty tapa, but I don't know what it is.
It is the poster for the 6th annual tapas festival in our village of Caniles. Some of the participating bars specialised in coctails, others in tapas. Here in the province of Granada we always get free tapas with every alcoholic drink (a tapa is a little snack). But once a year they have a special event where the tapas are a bit more special and the public can vote for the best tapa. It brings customers to the bars in a month when there is not much going on and it stimulates the chefs to create new things.
Last week was also our wedding anniversary. We celebrate it twice as we got married for the law in August and the big 'do' was when we got blessed in the church. This didn't happen until November as my parents were on a long holiday in New Zealand, (amongst other things). So the 22nd of November was our 26th wedding anniversary. I cooked pulled pork in the slow cooker in an oriental sauce. We had this with a bit of rice. Very nice it was.
Our drink was what my mother calls 'municipal pils', meaning it is beer provided by the city council i.e WATER.
Don't think that we had a very romantic evening. Hubby fell asleep by the fire cuddling the cat, lol!
That is it from me today. I hope to see you all at the Bluebeard and Elizabeth's T-Party with you beverage.
I'll leave you with a wise word from Joyce Meijer (my namesake. That is another bucket list item, to go and hear Joyce Meijer speak (live) one day.)
Have a very happy T-Day,
and a good week ahead,
Hugs,
Lisca

Hi Lisca, I love reading your interesting posts with the postcards and history of things. I always learn something new. Happy Anniversary-what a sweet photo of your kitty and husband-hugs
Happy T wishes Kathy
When I first saw the pelota postcard, I thought it reminded me of jai alai. I looked it up on the internet and it appears jai alai is a variation of pelota. Good to learn something new each T Tuesday.
I have an internet pal who lives in Finland. He is an engineer at one of the major unis there. He has numerous grants to study wind and its effects on the human body. Since they have so many winter ski teams, I can see where his research would be useful. Unfortunately that is all I know about Finland. Never heard of the cartoon characters before.
Tapas for a month would sure get me out of the house and probably drunk most of the time (grin).
How sweet that you had your 26th wedding anniversary. I enjoyed the photo of your husband and Precious sleeping together. Thanks for sharing your water and your morning coffee from your friends with us for T this Tuesday.
Love your postcards. I have never heard of Moomins but that Finnish cake on the stamp sure looks delicious. As well as those Tapas.
I always learn something new when I visit your blog on Tuesdays.
Your anniversary meal sounds yummy. As for your hubby falling asleep by the fire, it sounds like the perfect way to end the evening. A safe, warm place to be with the one that you love. Happy Anniversary!
Happy Tea Day,
Kate
Love the photo of hubby and cat sleeping in the armchair! I know the Moomins, and Finnish is really a strange language, but I was happy that all the people there speak good English, too.Happy Anniversary, continue enjoying your life so much! Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie
Always interesting postcards to see here.
Happy belated Anniverary greetings. Your hubby looks so peaceful with the cat.
Have a very happy T Day
Love Chrissie xx
This was a super post to read Lisca, the post card looked interesting and you also reminded me about the Moomins, as I read the post. I have to admit to not knowing about the sport, pelota .
Belated Happy Anniversary wishes to you both, the photo of your OH and the cat was a good one.
Your mums name for the water made me smile as well.
Happy T day wishes.
Yvonne xx

Wow, I learned so much this post. I have never heard of pelota and it is interesting to learn about. And also the Moomins. I have relatives who are Swedish speaking Finns (my great aunt and second cousins) so it is particularly interesting to learn about them. And big happy anniversary to you and your husband. Looks like you celebrated in very nice way! And of course, happy T day. Hugs-Erika

Pelota sounds very interesting, Lisca.
I never heard of Moomins and I was surprised to learn that Finnish is a language unto itself. The written words certainly do look different.
Happy anniversary and Happy T-day! Eileen xoxo
I love the Moomins! We read them aloud to the kids when they were little, and they are just such great characters. I guess I need to step up to a Moomin recipe, don't I! :) Happy T Tuesday :)
Hi Lisca, love looking at all your postcards. I was trying to find you on Postcrossing but forgot your name there. Can you tell me what it is so I can favourite your cards thanks
Bridget from Australia
Hi Lica,
I came back to explain the rub & sniff reindeer. I cut them out of a Christmas cookie baking article in Good Housekeeping magazine a couple of years ago. Eileen xoxo
Buenas Días; one of the few phrases that I can say in Spanish! Although, I took three years in High school, I remember little. Use it or loose it, they say! I had never heard of moomins, so thanks for the info.
Happy T Day!
I did love seeing the Moomins! Your special meal sounds good and I love that your hubby fell asleep with the cat!! Belated Happy T day!, Chrisx
