A Postcard A Day - Friday Smiles - Friday 20 July 2018

Hello lovely peeps,
Have you had a good week? Plenty to smile about? I have, but I haven't taken any photos....

What I do have is postcards. A whole week of nothing and then all of a sudden I get seven in my mailbox! One of them was in a large envelope with lots of interesting looking stamps on it:
It's from Ukraine. After some digging I found out that the round 'coins' are not coins but they are State signets of Ukraine. Here is some info in case you are interested:

The 'coin' on the top left is the Signet of Ukrainian Central Council , and the bearded gentleman is Mykhailo Hrushevskyi (1866-1934). He was a Ukrainian and Soviet academician, politician, historian, and statesman, one of the most important figures of the Ukrainian national revival of the early 20th century. (Wikipedia)

Top right you can see the Great Signet of Ukrainian People' Republic with Volodymyr Vynnychenko (1880-1951). He was a Ukrainian statesman, political activist, writer, playwright, artist, who served as 1st Prime Minister of Ukraine. (Wikipedia)

Then bottom left is the Draft of the Signet of the State Secretaryship of Ukrainian State - Pavlo Skoropadskyi (1873-1945). He was a Ukrainian aristocrat, military and state leader, decorated Imperial Russian Army and Ukrainian Army general of Cossack heritage. (Wikipedia)

and bottom right is the Signet of the Directory of Ukrainian People's Republic - Symon Petliura (1879-1926). He was a Ukrainian politician and journalist. He was the Supreme Commander of the Ukrainian Army and the President of the Ukrainian National Republic during Ukraine's short-lived sovereignty in 1918–1921, who led Ukrain's struggle for independence following the fall of the Russian empire in 1917..(Wikipedia)

This is the delightful card:
Oksana writes that her country is big enough to have cultural differences between the regions, and therefore different national costumes.

History lesson over. What have I done this week? Nothing really interesting. We have not been out as it is too hot to go anywhere.

On Sunday we celebrated the birthday of a lovely lady who has Down's syndrom. She is now in her late 50s and she loves photos and bracelets. Everyone gives her bracelets and I try to do something with photos. I had a small kit lying about to make a little photo book. So I quickly put a little thing together:
There were 8 pages in total. Here she is opening her present:
Now for some funnies:

Have a lovely weekend all of you,
Stay safe and keep smiling,
Lisca

  1. Nice funnies this week Lisca. I had an uncle who had Down's syndrome and I think it's sweet how you made her that little book for her birthday. They can do so much for them now and it is good to see that they can live long lives-at least compared to my uncle. And for some reason your first comment on my T day post showed up right before your second comment. Wonder why it took it so long to appear? Have a wonderful weekend. Hugs-Erika

  2. I really enjoyed both postcards. Those costumes are beautiful and very unique.

How sweet of you to make the photo gift for the lady. I taught 6 Downs Syndrome children every Saturday for about a year. Sadly, I had no funds and everything we made was out of my pocket. I finally had to give up because the kids were sweet, but I had no sponsors and the out of pocket cash was eating me alive (a meal, art supplies, etc).

I guess you know which funny I laughed at the hardest!!!!

  3. Ah bless, I must admit I have weeks where i photograph nothing and then realise on a Friday, so I understand that side of things completely. the postcards are brilliant - happy mail!

I also love the photo of your friend and her gift, really thoughtful of you, I'm sure she loved it!

The funnies made me giggle too.

I hope you have a fabulous weekend and week ahead.

    Hugs

  4. Thanks for joining in the fun again this week . I’m sorry I’m rather late visiting but I’ve been bear making all morning πŸ˜€πŸ˜€πŸ˜€ ....and will be all afternoon too.
I really love your postcards and all you find out about each one. Your funnies are brilliant. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  5. Lisca, you asked about the children in my post. Yes, I knew their mother and she entrusted me with them while she was in the hospital dying. She and I had gone to grad school together, so we were good friends. The children knew me well, too, even before I took care of them while their mother was dying. I watched as one was born and two were toddlers. I was thrilled they wanted to visit me this summer. We've done several fun things together.

  6. Hi Lisca, bit late as we've been out most of the day. We've been to the coast as this will be the last time for a while as the schools broke up today and it will be too busy for a while. Your funnies today are brilliant and love the postcards too. You asked about the Orchid which is a Vanda. These Orchids are either hung up like this or kept in a large jar. Either way you simply soak the roots until they turn green and then allow them to dry out. I do this a couple of time a week and feed it too. I have had this one for about five years so guessing it must be fairly happy as it keeps flowering. Still no idea what the flower in the pond is, I can only think the birds must have dropped the seeds and yes I am happy for it to be there. I didn't do any of the workshops at the show this time, just went for the shopping. The main company I wanted to see was Stampers Grove, they sell lots of stamps that I like but as they are based in Scotland this is a good chance to shop though they are on-line too. Thanks for the visit to mine and have a lovely weekend, Angela xxx

  7. What a fun card you had with all those colourful costumes. And you did a fair bit of research on the stamps too. It ads to the interest of your hobby, so it is good that we can learn so much about anything if we want to now.
The gift for your friend was very thoughtful. i am sure she will enjoy looking through your book for a long time to come.
I like the 'black night'. Those eyes! All you funnies made me smile, and smiling is good!
I am glad you have your cool flat to hide in on these hot, hot days. I have two fan on me this evening and I am still too warm. Kate x
