A Postcard A Day - Tuesday 13 June 2017 - T for Turkish döner,Dutch flowers and Syrah/Shiraz

Hello lovely people,

Here I am again, back from Holland.

I went to spend a week with my mum. She celebrated her 93rd birthday and I wanted to be with her (she lives alone).
Here she is with a large bouquet of flowers that my cousin brought:

I think my postcard for today will have to be one from Holland:
I have probably shared this card already some time ago, but I will show it again, because it shows the things I like (and miss) about Holland. The special boiled sweets, the cheese, the 'stroopwafels' (bottom left), and the liquorice, which is salted, and definitely an acquired taste! These are the things I brought back from my home country.

We had a great week, my mum and I. I cooked lots of nice things for her. I would cook large amounts so that she would have many little portions to put in the freezer.

One day we went to the newly opened Turkish Baker in the shopping precinct across the road:
I love all the different types of bread. In the glass part of the counter are all the sweets. And boy, do the Turks love their sweet things! I remember from my trips to Turkey that they are almost too sweet to eat!
-

So we didn't have any of that. They have many nice savoury things too:
All very yummy, I can assure you. But we went for the 'hot' counter where those gents are standing:
This chappie does the döner 'pizzas':
They are flatbread with a spicey sauce, which gets blasted in a super hot oven until it sort of bubbles. Then they put slivers of lamb or chicken on it, add cheese and sauce according to taste and purse, then they roll it up and hand it to you in aluminium foil, ready to eat.
This is what we ended up with. It was delish! And too much really to eat in one go, so I wrapped half of mine up and ate it the next day for supper.

As I am joining Elizabeth and Bleubeard for T for Tuesday, I am proudly presenting my drink that day: a glas of red Syrah wine (Syrah is the name of the grape. In France the wine of that grape is called Syrah, and in Australia, where it has a more new world taste, it is called Shiraz).

That is it from me today.
Happy T-Day to all,
Hugs,
Lisca

  2. Yummy, you chose well at that Turkish bakery, I get the same thing when I buy myself a snack here. And your food choices to bring back from Holland are among my faves, too, when I visit across the border, it's about half an hour's drive from here. And we have a Dutch fish stall at the market here every week. Happy birthday to your Mum, she looks great for her age, good that you were able to cook for her, too. Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie

  3. Your mum looks amazing and so well. Happy Birthday to her.

Beautiful postcards and wonderful pictures of the food shop. I loved seeing the food shops when we were in Holland and we went to an amazing Chinese place for a meal with the vegetable were carved into beautiful flowers and even carrots like temples.

Have a very happy T Day

    Love Chrissie xx

  5. Your Mom looks wonderful and what a gorgeous bouquet of flowers wow! So glad you could spend all that time with her. And that bakery-oh my-it all looks so enticing. I miss those European style bakeries...and now you have made me hungry-so I'd love to have what you're having:)
PS- the book 'One Souffle at a Time' is an interesting read about the author's (Ann Willan)life growing up in York England and the road to moving to France and opening a cooking school. There are also some recipes in the book:)
    Happy T day!

  6. Your mother is beautiful, and looks so active and happy. Happy belated birthday to her.

All the food looks wonderful at the Turkish bakery. I'm not sure I've ever had Turkish food, but I've eaten Mediterranean and Indian, which may be close.

Is that the meat (beef and lamb) they make Gyros out of sitting behind the guy at the counter? What a treat.

Thanks for sharing your Holland postcard, the Turkish Bakery and Cafe, your beautiful mother's birthday, and your wine with us for T this Tuesday.

  7. Your mom looks fantastic and so wonderful she can still live on her own. Sounds like you had a great trip. I've never been to a Turkish bakery as we don't have any around here, but I have had Greek pastries which might be similar and are very very sweet. I'd like to try some savory baking though. You've got me curious.Sounds like a fantastic visit and glad you shared. :) Hugs-Erika

  14. I really enjoyed this post, Lisca. I learned about a lot of things new to me. Döner 'pizzas' sound/look very tasty. I didn't know that syrah and shiraz were from the same grape. Glad you got to spend sme special time with your mom.

    Happy T-Day! Hugs, Eileen
