Hello lovely girls,
We're well into January now and things are going back to normal. I love holidays but it's so nice to get back to my own routine. I'm back in the gym and back doing Pilates.
Let me show you a postcard:
As you can see, it's from Tyrol in Austria.
Tyrol was separated into a northern and southern part in 1919, after WWI. North and East Tyrol was assigned to the Republic of Austria, which was invaded by the Wehrmacht in 1938. South Tyrol (the green bit on the map) became part of Italy and is still today.
I don't have to tell you how beautiful Tyrol is, as you only have to look at Violetta's blog to appreciate that.
When I was a young mum living in Italy, I used to travel up to Austrian Tyrol every year and meet with my parents (traveling down from the Netherlands) and my sister (flying in from the UK) for a skiing holiday. My son learnt to ski as a toddler. We were jealous about how fast he learned (no sticks needed). My parents and I usually went cross country skiing, called Langlauf. Because we all speak German, our first teacher was Austrian and he was 84 years old. A great guy. (and quite a character) I shall never forget him.
Later I also learnt downhill skiing. Lovely memories.
The stamp on the card looks like this:
Sambucus nigra is a species complex of flowering plants in the family Viburnaceae native to most of Europe. Common names include elder, elderberry, black elder, European elder, European elderberry, and European black elderberry. Wikipedia
So much for my postcard. What's been happening here in Spain? Well I have made my first loaf of sourdough bread!
Above is what it looked like before going in the oven.
My visitors (HomeExchange) had given me a sourdough starter, and after feeding it for a few days, I made this loaf. I used stone ground wheat flour with some rye flour too.
And below is how it came out:

It must be amazing to be able to ski and Speak different languages I'm very envious. Your first sour dough looks great it was something my hubby played with last year but has resorted to normal yeast recipe more recently, Ronnie is looking beautiful, cats are such good companions. Have a lovely weekend and week ahead. XXX
An 84 year old skiing teacher? Wow. On the other hand my neighbor still rides his pushbike at 86. I sure miss my Austrian customers...
The bread looks great and YES to sweet Ronnie!
The Issues sure made me smile. And the oven, haha, have a fun Friday.
I am not relaxed enough totry skiing, though we had several trips up to Sierra Nevada to watch other doing it, and just enjoy the atmosphere. I am no liguist either. Maths and Science were my subjects.
Well done on your bread. It looks delicious. It is a very fashionable thing here to serve everything on sourdough bread, but for me the crust is always too hard, though I enjoy the middle bit!
I hope I am getting older without getting old. I do love my colours and won't be an old lady in grey and black! Kate x
Wow Lisca. I am so jealous you can speak so many languages. I can do a bit of French, and that's it. My Dad, who was in World War 2, felt that we were American and only needed to speak English. So other than the French I learned at school, that was it. Of course my Dad was bilingual as his parents came from Sweden and Swedish was spoken at home. I wonder if that made him uncomfortable but he would never say that. And your bread looks amazing. I bet it was tasty too. Have a super weekend, and give Ronnie a pat for me. hugs-Erika
Ha, dear Lisca, I immediately thought I recognized the style of your postcard – of course, it's Austrian design and was once popular in tourism advertising! You've traveled a lot in your life – it's wonderful that you also learned to ski (and speak German) in Tyrol! Your sourdough bread looks excellent! And you can take my compliment seriously: My husband is an enthusiastic and talented bread baker – so I know what good bread should look like. And I know what a cute cat should look like – your cat Ronnie is definitely one of those 😻 Thank you also for all your funnies and thinkies – I especially love the picture that goes with "Age is just a number".
And now in German:
Herzliche Wintergrüße aus Österreich ❄️☃️ (wenn auch nicht aus Tirol...)
