WOYWW 284 I'm a grandma

Hi Peeps! It’s Wednesday again! It comes round so quickly.
On Wednesdays around 80 crafters photograph their desk/work space and post it on their blogs. Then we all have fun hopping from one desk to another to see what people are doing. It’s a great source of inspiration and encouragement. Read more about it at Julia’s blog:http://www.stamping-ground.blogspot.com.es/

Here is my desk. I continue with my motto: ‘use up the stash that you have’ and I’m making Christmas cards with papers and elements from a cardmaking magazine from 2009! I love the colours.

The Christmas cards were pushed aside temporarily to make a very special card! My son in Italy and his wife have just had a baby boy! So I’ve made a little bassinet card from an Anna Griffin book. Anna Griffin was very popular a few years ago but I still like the style and from time to time I dip into my Anna Griffin box to do a project.

Isn’t it cute? The colour is a soft olive green although it’s not very clear in the photo. My daughter-in-law doesn’t like the boy-blue/girl-pink thing and she has decorated and painted the nursery in green, so she’s getting a green card too!

I’m still crafting in the pantry and I’m finding it very cosy. As many of you have commented, I can just stretch my arm to get my hands on a large slab of dark chocolate..... (Oh temptation...)

The build of the house is going to plan although no work was done today as it rained. I had to smile at that. I’ve lived in the UK for several years. If builders went home every time it rained in England they would never ever get anything built!

Here is a photo of the building so far. It’s built over 4 floors. The men are working on the roof. We’re having a wooden roof with wooden beams, visible on the inside. (It will be tiled on the outside). The white building on the left with the green gate is also ours. The green gate is the entrance to a small vine covered court yard. From that court yard you can come into the (cave) house where inside I am typing this at the moment.

Do come in! It’s nice and warm inside. I've just made a pumpkin pie. (I made pumpkin soup the yesterday. These pumpkins are so big I have to continuously think of things to cook with it.) But the pie is definitely my favourite. I had some allspice sent to me from a friend in Mexico, and although I don’t know what it’s supposed to taste like, an American lady  in our church said my pies are delicious.

Thanks for visiting. I will try and visit as many of you as I can over the course of the week. Have a good week.

God bless
Lisca

    1. Thanks Lizzy. We don't normally have pumpkin pie in Europe. It's a typical American thing. I found recipes on the internet and as I said, a friend bought me some Allspice. But the first time I did it I made it with spices that I had anyway (cinnamon, ground cloves, ginger powder etc) and it tasted great. Have a go!
      Have a good week,

  4. Great motto to use up your stash! My motto is sell it if you can't use it to make room (and money) for new stuff! What a lovely card - congratulations! I like the name Luciano - sounds so Italian! Enjoy your week! zsuzsa @ InkyDinkyDoodle #33

  9. Congratulations Granny Lisca! The card is lovely. Wow that is a lot of building, is it an extension to the cave or a replacement?
That is high praise from an American, you must have it right!

  12. I think using stuff from 2009 should get an award and in all honestly... probably looks fresh and very new as we have all forgotten it by now! Love your baby card, that bassinet is so sweet... maybe you could do a tutorial on how to make it? Pretty please? Annette #31

    1. Thank you for the compliment. Yes, I'll do a tutorial. Don't know how legal that is as it is an Anna Griffin project, but as long as I acknowledge it is her idea I don't see a problem. What do you think?

  15. What a great post, Lisca, and what an absolutely adorable new baby card you've made! Well done. So nice to see the progress of your new house, too. I love these before, during and after type of photos and did it when we moved last year. If you don't, it's often hard to remember just what it was like before you started. I had to laugh about them crying off because of the rain! A building site isn't a building site if it hasn't been reduced to a sea of mud at least once in its lifetime!

Thanks for your absolutely lovely comment - you could have gone on for pages and I'd have loved it all! So glad you appreciate all the Scottish stuff, and that you liked "The Road to the Isles" so much - I'd love to have heard your hubby singing along lol!! I've been singing the song all day! I love it so much, and it's so full of lovely Scots names and dialect words. I know exactly what is meant by "the tangle of the Isles" and how "their laughter puts the leap upon the lame" - being a wheelchair user and crutch staggerer, the thought of being up in the Highlands again would make me want to leap for joy! There is absolutely no place like it on the whole earth.

I found a whole playlist on Youtube of Kenneth McKellar songs and have been playing it while working on my album. So uplifting!

    Thanks again. Happy WOYWW,

  20. Congratulations on the birth of your new grandson. Your bassinet card is beautiful. Thank you for sharing this week, you make me smile when you describe living in a 'cave' and crafting in the 'pantry'. My mum has an old fashioned pantry where she keeps all her cans and packets of food. They don't build them in houses these days! Thanks for your visit earlier

  21. Thanks for dropping by Lisca! It's never too late :) I nearly always late myself. I love seeing what's happening with your house, and the cave pantry you are working in, although, now I come to think of it, it's not much different from here. I work in the kitchen at the kitchen bench because I like to create standing up. So, even though I have a "room" I never use it and it looks like Hoarders Central!
I love the bassinet card! And I agree with your DIL about the blue for boys, pink for girls thing :) Was it fiddly to make? I usually avoid anything that involves measuring and folding :)
Wish I was there to help you eat that pumpkin pie. I've never had pumpkin pie, but it looks very good!
    Have a good week,

    1. Thanks for your encouragement.
No, the card was very easy to make. Some people have asked for a tutorial so I'll be working on that. Yes, it does involve measuring. But I have an English ruler with inches on it. so it's easy.( I'll have to explain in cm too I suppose if this goes world wide.) I did a trial with some waste paper just incase it was complicated., but it wasn't. ...It only took me a couple of minutes to do the 'ruffles' bit.
Never eaten pumpkin pie? You don't know what you're missing! It lovely and sweet, and spicey (depending on taste).

  22. Hi Lisca, thanks for stopping by at mine. I understand about taking your time getting round everybody, there are so many interesting things to read. The house is going to be amazing. I have most of my stash in the loft where I sew (non of my blogging friends have seen it) and I do my papercrafting downstairs in a small extension at the back of the house, the space is small but looks out onto the garden which often distracts me but I love the view. The baby card is lovely, I have the Anna Griffin book that the idea came from, her work is so pretty and you're right sometimes her designs are just the thing that's needed. Never tried pumpkin in any form but it looks good.
Better move on, till next time happy crafting, Angela x 39

  23. Hello and thankyou for visiting my blog. I didn't mind you being late :-) - I like that you take time to look and read properly - I like to do the same. You are so right about builders and rain in England. My son has just had some work done and a lot of it was done in pouring rain! Your house looks and sounds fascinating. I am trying to use up stash - making items for a charity Christmas fair! Many congratulations on becoming a grandma. Hope you will see the new arrival soon. Anne x

  24. Congratulations on the new arrival to your family, your card looks wonderful. I will have to look out on how to create something like that, it is so unusual and stunning. having lived abroad myself, rain and any outdoor work does not go together lol. My daughters still dont understand why they have to go to uni if it is raining as you dont go out the house in that weather. Love your blog and just about to sign up to be a follower. Tracey @ 20

  26. Good for you for using up the old stuff and not buying new stuff. I plan to do the same with the exception of the home party company I sell (A Muse Studio). I have to buy and use their new things to show them off to the customers. I am quite sure that I could never buy new Christmas stash again and be set for the rest of my life.

Dio and I say thank you for visiting our desk this week. Several of my visitors have asked me to use that cut and tuck die so I will try to put that together for next week. I'm not sure where I have put the double sided paper though so we'll see what we come up with. I did make a card with one of the scary dudes (scarecrows) but haven't decided what to do with the other one yet.

  27. That baby card is so cute, so pretty--what a sweet design. I'm right with you about using up the stash, Lisca--good motto. And you know I always like a peek at your building progress.

Pumpkin pie is such a tradition here, it seems funny that you wouldn't know if it tasted "right."

You know, I really like that you're woywwing at your own pace--I give up if I don't have time to do it in a day or two, but from now on, I'm just going to peruse desks all week long--thank you for the inspiration (and the woyww visit), Lisca!

  29. Great post Lisca! I enjoyed reading about the new grandbaby and the card you made. I am not a good grandma cause I haven't made my new grandson anything yet...soon. I will be going over Thanksgiving to Virginia to visit and meet him. My granddaughters are so excited about their new brother and finally being able to hold him! They came down with the croup (that's what the ED doctor called it) about 3 days after he was born and the folks have been isolating him as best they could till the pediatrician saw them today and said they could hug him today! Love the house and how it is coming along. It is huge! Are you going to let out part of it or use it all for yourself? So much space from the looks of it. Been talking with a friend on Mallorca about a house in Bunyola but don't know if I want to move out of the states at my age! Pumpkin pie looks and sounds awesome. I think the spices are a personal preference. I love a lot of spice so I tend to put more allspice, ginger, cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon in mine. I know of people that only use cinnamon and allspice. Makes a nice custard type pudding with some heavy cream if you leave the crust off. Have a great week and thanks for visiting my blog earlier. Vickie @43

    1. Yes, I remember croup was quite common 30 years ago. Not so much now though. I'm glad they've all been able to hug and kiss their brother. Have you been over yet? (Not being in the US I have no idea when Thanksgiving is....)
I've never been to Bunyola, Mallorca. I know that Mallorca is very touristy and that doesn't attract me. But the advantage is that there will be many English speaking people. Our pastor's wife (in the church) is from the States, so if you have doubts or questions about say healthcare, insurance or permits etc, I can put you in contact with her.
Pumpkin pie was awesome! It tasted really nice and spicey.

Hd a smile when I read your comment on my blog - I too (with all those stamps) have not used any as yet on a single Christmas card. What are we like?
Love the baby card - I am sure she will be delighted with it and it could become a picture for the nursery.
Nice to see the house as it stands at the moment. Have you any idea on when it should be completed - or does it depend on the rain?

    1. Thank you for commenting. Did you know you can cook a whole pumpkin (well, a butternut squash) wrapped in alu foil in the oven? Thats how I do it. When I make pumpkin soup I actually use the skin, softened by the baking, too. I just remove the seeds and stringy bits and cut it up in chunks and I wizz it in a food processor or use a hand blender depending what is handy at the time. (skin and all). Baking the pumpkin brings out its natural sweetness. It tastes very nice. Do try it.
Did you have to do verification at my blog? I thought I'd switched that off! Please tell me.
No, I don't mind you being late. I myself take all week to get through all of them. The new week starts tomorrow so you are well in time lol!

  39. LOL crafting in the pantry sounds so funny - you usually only find old UK houses that have a pantry (I have one of those large pull out rack cupboards) but my granny had a huge walk in pantry in the farm cottage that she lived in, large enough for her to have a small table where she did all of her baking prep as her kitchen wasn't large enough to fit a table in. I think I used the papers in your first photograph a couple of years ago, a friend very kindly gives me all her unwanted magazine papers for me to make my charity cards from. Congratulations on becoming a grandma or are you a nanna? The baby card is very lovely and it makes a change to see a different colour to the traditional blue or pink. Thank you for visiting my desk, best wishes KraftyKaren #72

    1. Hi Karen, thanks for commenting.
Our pantry is the size of a box room. We could turn it into a bedroom. But the door has mosquito wire (very fine chicken wire, I don't know what it's called in English) so we'd have to have a proper door in that case. We still have the huge hooks hanging on a pole across the ceiling where people used to hang the hams and sausages. It's cool and dark so ideal to keep vegetables in the summer. My fridge is always too small.
Am I a nana or a grandma? Well, I live in Spain where grandmas are called 'abuela'. My son is Italian and they call their grandmas 'nonna'. I myself come from Holland where grandmas are 'oma', but my grandmother was called Omi for some reason. I will ask my son what he would like but to my 7 grandchildren in the UK (I have 3 English step children) I am already Omi, so it might be handy to be Omi in Italy too. (Sorry, that was a long answer to a simple question...)
CU tomorrow for the next deskhop.
