Hello lovely ladies,
How are you all? Today is Tuesday again. It has come around so fast! I'm going to visit Elizabeth and Bluebeard at the T-Party. Will you join us? All that is needed is a blog post with a beverage or reference to a beverage in it. You will see mine in a little while, but first I'd like to show you my postcard for today.
She was born to Akuol, a housewife, and Athian, a teacher and was the seventh of nine children in her family. Her family grew up in
extreme poverty, but Wek remembers being happy and peaceful.
She suffered from a skin condition known as psoriasis from birth until
the age of 14. It cleared up because of the climate change once she moved to
London with her family.
In 1985, a civil war broke out in Sudan, which caused the Wek family to
flee their now dangerous home. Her father eventually died on the journey after
an infection in his hip.
In 1991, Wek’s family finally arrived in London where Alek had a hard
time adjusting to the cold climate. Bullies at school picked on her dark skin
and accent. She enrolled in ‘London’s College of Fashion’ and majored in
fashion business and technology.
In 1995, Wek was discovered at the age of 19 by a ‘Model 1’ scout named Fiona Ellis.
Ralph Lauren chose her to walk in his runway show within the first year
of moving to New York, an unprecedented achievement for a new model. This
assignment propelled her modelling career and helped her establish a strong
foothold in the white-dominated industry.
In 2007, she published an autobiographical book that detailed her
journey from refugee to supermodel in order to spread awareness.
In 2002, she became an advisor to the US Committee for ‘Refugees
Advisory Council’ where she helps raise awareness for the issues facing Sudan
and refugees around the world.
In 2003, she entered into a relationship with an Italian real estate
developer named Riccardo Sala. It was reported that the pair had split up after
an affair of eleven years.
In July of 2012, she returned to her home country with the ‘UN Refugee
Agency’ in an effort to spread awareness of how much work must be done to
rebuild this country.
In 2014, Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o gave a speech in which she spoke
about her negative self-esteem regarding her appearance growing up. However,
when she saw Wek in the media, she realized she too could be beautiful. Nyong’o
has since won several awards for her work, including an Oscar.
She is still working for many charitable organizations, including ‘World Vision’, ‘UNICEF’, and ‘Doctors Without Borders’ in Sudan.
What an amazing woman!
The stamps are interesting:
I particularly like the car. It is a VW Golf. It was my favorite car back in the days. When I lived in Italy, there was a black VW Golf at the second hand car dealer. We wanted to buy it but by the time we came up with the money, the car had already been sold to another. I was so disappointed! Later in the UK, in the early 90s, our eldest who was a student and living with us, bought an old Golf and painted it black. It did bring back memories...
This week has been a quiet week as it has been dull and sometimes rainy weather. So I have stayed in most days. Of course, I did what i like doing, which is baking! I made cinnamon rolls:

Loved that story behind the lovely model! And beautiful stamps.
Your food looks so yummy! That quiche has me drooling!
Your doors are so pretty. I love the glass and natural wood.
And such great memes, particularly the Morgan Freeman one...so true.
Happy Tea Day,
Kate
Interesting backstory for such a beauty. I love hearing things like that. The VW stamp had me smiling. I had a VW Rabbit, two actually, that looked almost identical to that.
Glad you were able to get your vaccine.
Happy T day!
Boy, Alek Wek is a gorgeous lady, isn't she? I'm glad you shared this postcard and story. I like your doors too. They look great Lisca. I think I would put mine upside down for the dogs. All I baked last week were some brownies, so all your food looks so good. I haven't heard of a quick quiche like that, but I think I can smell your cinnamon roles from the photo. I always dreamed about having (and still do) a VW cabriolet or carbrio. Maybe one day I will find a used one still. Never give up Lisca. Who knows what can happen. Congrats on your shot. I am all set too. Happy T day. Hugs-Erika
Alek wek is breathtaking!! Thank you for sharing her story.
Love your new doors- and the photo of the upside down door- so clever:):)
Nothing like fresh cinnamon rolls and I would love one with my morning coffee. And the quiche=that sounds really yummy- right up my alley.
Glad to hear you got your vaccination and all went well. Happy T day!
What a great postcard. Alek Wek is absolutely stunning. I'm always overjoyed when I read that a person has overcome poverty, adversity, and gained respect in the world. It makes me want to tell those bullies they didn't win.
I'm so glad you shared your doors because I failed to mention them in my Friday Smiles post. And I'm glad you got your first vaccine. I'm sure that is a relief to you. I know you'll feel even better when Graham gets his.
Oh, I really want one of those cinnamon rolls. They look really cinnamon-y, too. I'll have mine with coffee, too, please (grin). I'd love some of that quiche, too. I'm sure it was wonderful.
I truly enjoyed your memes. The one with Morgan Freeman was so true. Thanks for sharing your postcard of Alek Wek, the stamps, including the VW, your things you baked, your coffee, and those great sayings with us for T this Tuesday, dear Lisca.
I hope you don´t mind, I´ll link to this on Thursday...
Oh, seesh, now I want to read Alek Wek´s books!
Ingo had a Golf II in that color. He gave it to me for my training in Hanover, all good. That´s trust, his brother crashed his first one.... Now he drives Skoda.
Hmmmm... the quiche looks soooo good. Added the recipe to my favs And soon will give it a go!
Glad you had only minor side effects. I´m the queen of that and will wait till I have to get a shot (I don´t meet anyone anyways).
Now we´re just beautiful, aw, that made me smile.
Love Morgan Freeman - sexy and wise. Happy T-Day, hugs from here.
Hi Lisca, Wek is really a very beautiful and clever lady. Your baking looks delicious, I swear I can smell the cinnamon rolls! Wonderful new doors, and love the upside-down 'dog-door', too funny. I got my first vaccination last week, too. Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie
Beautiful! Cinnamon rolls are one of my favourites and that quick quiche looks so yummy too 😀. Glad you've had your first vaccination and I smiled when my hubby showed me the door and puppies photo a few days ago - fabulous! Wishing you a very happy T Day! Hugs, Jo x
Your baking looks delicious Lisca, my husband doesn't like filo pastry for some reason although I do for a change. your quiche looks delicious.
Love the new doors, will keep the heat in I imagine in winter, we have a conservatory across the front of the villa which does help but keeps the heat in in the summer, LOL can¡t win really.
My husband had one of those VW golf cars in silver, very reliable too.
Pleased to hear your vaccine experience was good unlike my DH's, hoping for mine soon.
Have a Happy T Day
Jan x
Wonderful post! The story of the Alek is wonderful and inspiring! I have seen her picture before but never knew the story. TFS. Also love your doors, all your other pictures (especially the cinnamon rolls and quiche), and the quote from Mr. Freeman which is so totally true. Glad you got your shot and so hoping your hubby gets his soon and is feeling a bit better.
Your cinnamon rolls look delicious! I can see how they'd be irresistible :) Speedy quiche sounds like a useful idea. Your door is nice. I'm considering a metal front door, and that wood look is attractive. Congratulations on getting the vaccine and glad your husband has his lined up, too. I got a kick out of your quotes :) Happy T Tuesday!
What a great way to use filo dough, which I’ve had in the freezer for months and no ideas. The story of the model was very enjoyable.

Interesting information. I love visiting these tea party blogs as I learn things at each one. :) Your cinnamon rolls and quiche look scrumptious.
Happy T Day!
Interesting and uplifting story of Alex Wek. Congrats on getting your vaccine and on those awesome looking cinnamon buns. Cool front door, too. Happy T Day
What an interesting story about beautiful Alek Wek. A heart lifting confusion too! Your door will stop a lot of draughts getting in and they look great too. Our door opens up onto our large hall but there's no convenient way to add a door. The cinnamon buns look delicious and I am going to look that Jamie recipe up. Glad your vaccines are both going to be done! Coffee with Apple and Walnut cake sounds good to me! Belated Happy T Day, Chrisx
awesome quotes at the end... yum to cinnamon buns. I've had my first dose of vaccine and had a lot of reactions so I'm scared of the second one but what else can we do???
pancakes... I make them and save them for a couple breakfasts in next mornings, they warm well and taste fine for days. I love leftovers or as my friend calls them planned-overs
This is just a beautiful post. I want one of those sweet rolls and what a great idea for the filo dough. YAY doors. Now that card with Alek Wek is gorgeous. I have drawn her face before. I will look for the drawing. Thanks for the birthday wishes too.
Hi Lisca I really enjoyed this post so much.
Your cinnamon rolls look delicious-my husband loves though-I should bake him up a batch for a surprise. On my cast iron saturdays post I shared a recipe baked in cast iron over a fire.
Your quiche looks sooo good I am going to looking into that recipe.
I Love your new doors-and the door where there puppies could look out is so neat. Happy new week Kathy
Oh and I love Morgan Freeman
