A Postcard A Day - Tuesday 11 February 2020 - T for shipping lines, wedding rings and beer vats

 Hello lovely ladies, buenas días.

Here is a lovely cup of coffee for you. The translation of the above is: Good morning! The joy of living.
Today when you go down the street, give away smiles, give away joy. If there is no answer, give away more anyway.

That is a good way to live. Always smile. I live in a (large) village where people still say hello to each other even if they don't know you. I greet people I meet in the street and I always smile when I greet.

Of course I have some postcards for you. The first one is very colourful and comes from Germany. It is one of those old posters. I haven't been able to find out much about the Germany-Africa line. Only that it was a shipping line, established in 1890 as an alternative to the existing shipping services to East Africa, including German East Africa (1891–1919), then dominated by United Kingdom shipping lines.
The stamps are beautiful. The one on the right is an image of Beethoven. I assume the stamp was brought out to celebrate the 250 years since his birth (in 1770).
The flower on the other stamp is Wiesenschaumkraut, which in English would be Lady's Smock or Cuckoo flower.

I am a bit envious of the German postage. They pay 95 cents and we pay 1,45 for a postcard within Europe.

This second card also comes from Germany. It is an ad-card. It means that it advertises something. I use them too sometimes if they are pretty. This one is rather nice too. It is about hand-made rings. It reads: "Your rings, our handiwork.

Are you wondering which engagement or wedding ring suits you best? We are happy to help you find the right one and look forward to hearing from you."
The stamp is the usual German  flower stamp. This time it is knapweed.
I wouldn't be here for the T-Party if I hadn't a drink to share with you all.
There is a story to these pictures. Our car is now nearly 5 years old and in this country every car older than 5 years has to submit to a regular technical inspection, so when we got a letter explaining this fact, we went and made an appointment for Saturday morning. I had agreed to take the car through as I speak better Spanish, and hubs gets rather nervous when people call out 'orders' he doesn't understand. When we got there (and patiently waited our turn) the lady told us the documents I had given her were for a car, but the appointment was for the motorbike! It turns out that our motorbike is also 5 years old and has a number plate very similar to that of the car! In the end the (very kind) employee made another appointment for us for the motorbike, and then one for the car next month as it was due in March. By the time we left the building, it was midday and we decided that we would pop into the nearest bar for a coffee.
As we had had such a frustrating morning, we treated ourselves to a glass of Baileys, a very popular Irish alcoholic drink  flavored with cream, cocoa, and Irish whiskey.
The large vats hanging above the bar are beer brewery vats. I'm sure they were there purely for decoration because as far as we are aware this place does not make its own beer.

But we thought it was rather unusual.

That is it from me today. I'm going to join the T-Party hosted by Elizabeth and Bleubeard. Please join us with a blog post that has a beverage or is drink related.

Happy T-Day all!
Keep smiling,
Lisca

Hi Lisca, sorry about the inspection appointment-but stuff like that does happen-sigh beautiful stamps and postcards. I agree a big smile is perfect when meeting strangers-we have always lived so rural with few people to walk into-but I try to do that at stores I shop in.
that is a neat spot for a drink-loved the copper beer vats.
Happy T day smiles-Kathy

Wow, Lisca, what an inspiring post. Loved the postcards, especially the one with the ship. And those postage stamps are adorable. The flowers seem to be everywhere in Germany. I got some once from Valerie, and they are all so different.

I had no idea about your motorcycle and car. In Missouri, we had an inspection every year before we could get our plates. Not so in Kansas. The car is inspected when we buy or sell it, but that's it. It's ironic how states that sit side by side are so different in their licensing.

I fell in LOVE with those copper vats. They are simply gorgeous. I've even had a Baileys Irish Cream. I'm not a drinker, so one sip was enough, but it had a great taste, until I got a taste of the liquor. Thanks for sharing your postcards, your trip to the licensing bureau, and your Baileys with us for T this Tuesday, dear Lisca.

Love the opening card with the lovely visual and message!! I tried to interpret it myself, but my Spanish is just , well, bad as I only had two years of it. The ship postcard is so vibrant! Glad you were able to get both your car and motorbike all situated without much incident. Yes, you deserved your Baileys:) Cheers and happy T day!

What an adventure. Mandatory inspections sound like a good idea for older vehicles. And your coffee treat was an even better idea! Happy T Day :)

This is a wonderful entry!
The other day I was in a hurry. A child looked at my "happy hat" and screamed "hello!" and I sped by. I felt so darn bad after that!
I promised I´ll never speed by a "hello"! (I still feel bad).

We live in a big city, yet our quarter is like a village, too.

Interesting post-card! It is a big shame what we did not learn at school.

What?! 95 cents now?! Risen again?!!!

Nice card. My Brother is a goldsmith and this would be an idea for him (but it´s just a small town where he lives, sadly).

Oh, that sounds complicated with your vehicles, glad the people are friendly there! A Baileys, LOL, good excuse :-)
And such a great place!

A happy T-day to you, and thank you, I am smiling. Big.

Wonderful cards, and I love the quote on the first piece with the coffee. I don't like it when people don't greet and smile. I find the German postage rather expensive, the inland rates are sometimes more expensive than the overseas ones! Sorry about the mix up with your vehicles, but the bar visit was a good solution afterwards, and Bailey's is always good! Happy T Day, have a good week, hugs, Valerie

Fabulous postcards! I'm loving that bar too, the copper beer vessels look amazing 😁. Speaking from experience I think they are just for decoration too, it would be so hard to brew beer with them suspended as they are ...lol 😉. Happy T Day! Hugs, Jo x

Lisca our old car was 20 years old and had to have the ITV every year, I don’t blame your husband not wanting to do it as they do bark orders at you and it’s off putting if you don’t understand !
We had a letter from them we understood most of it but as we in the bank we asked the bank manager to just clarify it, he fell about laughing as it said our car was basically a wreck! Apparently it’s to try to get you to buy a new one, our car was still going strong when we sold it last year, steve was quite offendedLOL
We always say hello on our walks along the Paseo, we see the same people nearly every day it feels as if we know them.
As usual you have some interesting cards and pretty stamps.
Happy T day

It is interesting how those vats are hung. I don't think I have seen that before, but it is a cool set up. And you got the perfect postcard to T day this week. Glad you were able to get the car and motorbike figured out. My car is into getting it inspected as we have to do that every year, no matter how old the vehicle. I don't know how that compares to your technical inspection. I am just hoping I don't get a call saying my cars needs something done to it. Hope you have a super T day. Hugs-Erika

Bailey's is nearly a staple at our house LOL!
Loved the post cards, those postage stamps were very pretty.
Those vats are really cool looking.
Happy T-day

The postcards and those beautiful stamps looked lovely.
It sounds like you needed the Bailey's after the morning sorting out the inspection tests on your car and motorbike. We have Tests here as well for older cars.
How right you are to say that a smile is a good way to greet people.
In our village we usually give a smile as we pass folk.
Belated Happy T day wishes Lisca.

I LOVE your "dicho" for today's T, Lisca. Interesting postcards from Germany. You always add such good info.

Your motorbike/car story sounded "muy mexicano." Here also, the best response is to "regala sonrisas" and go with the flow. There's another Mexican saying that translates, "He who gets angry first, loses." Do you have that one?

I would be nervous sitting there if the beer vats were full!

You asked in your comment to me whether a big box store was economical for two people. Yes, absolutely. We have a chest freezer and enough storage space for paper goods in bulk. The quality of meat is much better than at lakeside and we can buy frozen convenience foods and other things not available lakeside. Finally, we can combine the trip with doctor appointments and end the day with lunch at a great restaurant!

Happy T-day! Eileen xx

I forgot to add ... It sounds like you bought an early model Cricut. I felt the same way when I started buying die cuts for a manual cutter. Instead of cartridges, you had to buy bulky expensive die cuts for every design. Eileen xx

Lovely postcards and stamps. We have something similar in Connecticut United States for our vehicles, except for us, it starts when the car, motorbike, truck, etc. is 2 years old, and then you have to go back every 2 years for testing. Those large vats over the bar do make interesting decor for the place. Happy T-Day!
